After Violation But Before Sanction: Understanding Volunteer Moderators' Profiling Processes Toward Violators in Live Streaming Communities

Content moderation is an essential part of online community health and governance. While much extant research centered on what happens to the content, also involves management violators. This study focuses how moderators (mods) make decisions about their actions after violation takes place but before sanction by examining they "profile" Through observations interviews with volunteer mods Twitch, we found that engage in a complex process collaborative evidence collection profile violators into different categories decide type extent punishment. Mods consider violators' characteristics as well behavioral history context taking action. The main purpose profiling was avoid excessive punishment aim integrate more community. We discuss contributions practice suggest design mechanisms facilitate mods' processes.
